The Ultimate 3-Day Margaret River Escape: A Perth to South West Itinerary

Plan a 3-Day Margaret River Escape from Perth

Margaret River is about 270 kilometres south of central Perth. The direct drive generally takes around three hours in normal conditions, but a three-day escape gives you time to experience the coast, caves, forests and local food without treating the journey as a race.

There are two practical ways to make the trip: drive yourself for maximum flexibility or choose a guided multi-day tour that handles transport, accommodation and bookings. This guide explains both options so you can choose what suits you.

Travelling in an electric vehicle? Use our Perth to Margaret River EV road-trip guide for current charging information.

Option 1: A Self-Drive 3-Day Escape

Day 1: Perth, Mandurah and Busselton

Mandurah Ocean Marina and Dolphin Quay

Route: Perth → Mandurah → Busselton → Margaret River

Leave Perth early and allow extra time for traffic, roadworks and rest stops. Mandurah’s foreshore and Dolphin Quay can make a pleasant first break. Dolphins live in the estuary, but sightings are never guaranteed.

Continue to Busselton Jetty, which extends 1.841 kilometres into Geographe Bay and is the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. Walking access, the train and the Underwater Observatory have different arrangements, so check current tickets and operating times before travelling.

If time allows, stop at Gabriel Chocolate’s factory and café at 219 Harman’s Mill Road, Metricup. Products and sampling arrangements can change, so visit for the current chocolate, drinks, gelato and café offerings rather than relying on a promised tasting.

Stay in Margaret River town for convenient evening dining, or choose Prevelly or Gnarabup if you prefer a coastal base. Compare options in our Margaret River accommodation guide.

Day 2: Cave, Forest and Southern Coast

Visitors following the established walkway through Mammoth Cave

Route: Margaret River → Mammoth Cave → Boranup Forest → Hamelin Bay → Augusta

Book Mammoth Cave’s self-guided audio experience and allow about an hour. The entrance and first chamber have limited mobility access, but the complete route includes many stairs and uneven surfaces. Check the current accessibility information when booking.

Continue through Boranup Forest, where pale-barked karri trees reach 50 metres or more. Boranup Drive is unsealed, and conditions can change, so check Parks WA alerts and drive to the conditions.

At Hamelin Bay, enjoy the beach and coastal scenery. Wild stingrays sometimes enter the shallows, but sightings are never guaranteed. Never touch, feed or crowd them.

If time and bookings allow, continue to Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse near Augusta. It is the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia and looks over the Indian Ocean to the west and Southern Ocean to the south and east. Entry and tower tours require current ticket and operating-time checks.

Day 3: Local Produce and the Return to Perth

Route: Margaret River → Cowaramup or Wilyabrup → Perth

Start with coffee in Margaret River, then choose one or two food or wine experiences rather than rushing between stops. Olio Bello’s café, tasting room and farm shop make one option, while Cowaramup offers an easy village stop before returning north.

If you visit a cellar door, nominate an alcohol-free driver. Do not schedule several wine tastings immediately before the drive back to Perth. Alternatively, enjoy coffee, chocolate, olive oil and other non-alcoholic regional experiences.

Option 2: Take a Guided Three-Day Tour

McLeod Tours’ Margaret River 3 Day Escape is a current alternative for travellers who do not want to hire a car or manage accommodation and attraction bookings.

The operator currently lists the following inclusions:

  • Return transport from Perth CBD
  • Two nights’ accommodation in Margaret River
  • Breakfast on days two and three and three regional lunches
  • Guided wine tastings and local-produce experiences
  • Entry to Busselton Jetty, Mammoth Cave and Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse
  • Small-group touring and itinerary planning

Tour routes, accommodation, inclusions, prices and minimum numbers can change. Confirm everything directly with McLeod Tours before paying, particularly the departure point, dietary arrangements and cancellation conditions.

Self-Drive or Guided Tour?

Choose self-drive if…Choose a guided tour if…
You want control over stops and timing. You prefer someone else to manage the route.
You are comfortable driving about 270 km each way.You want return transport from Perth.
You have an alcohol-free driver for winery visits. Both travellers want to participate in tastings.
You want to select your own accommodation. You prefer accommodation and major entries bundled together.

Neither option is automatically better. Self-driving provides flexibility, while a guided package removes much of the planning and makes wine experiences easier for every adult in the group.
